After a Central Texas storm: a home repair checklist

September 2026 · 5 min read

Central Texas storms tend to arrive fast and dump a lot of water at once. A 20-minute walk around the house afterward catches most problems while they are still small.

Safety first

Stay clear of downed lines and do not go on the roof. Most checks can be done from the ground.

Walk the outside

Look up, then look down.

  • Missing or lifted shingles and granules collecting at downspouts.
  • Gutters pulled away from the fascia or overflowing.
  • Water pooling against the foundation.
  • Leaning fence sections and broken gate latches.
  • Dented AC fins, window screens and siding after hail.

Then check inside

Water often shows up a day later.

  • New ceiling stains, especially near exterior walls.
  • Damp attic insulation around roof penetrations.
  • Musty smells in closets on exterior walls.

Document before repairs

Take dated photos of all damage before anything is fixed. Your insurer will want them, and they help a roofer or adjuster see the full picture.

Questions we get

What does post-storm gutter cleaning cost in Austin?
Current Austin range from our price list: $225-$375 for a post-storm emergency clear. Roof damage itself needs a roofer.
Should I call insurance first or a contractor?
Document the damage, prevent further damage with temporary fixes like a tarp, then contact your insurer before major repairs.
