Attic insulation and ventilation in Austin heat

An Austin attic in July runs 130 to 150 degrees. Every duct, every ceiling, and every stored box is sitting in that. Two cheap things, insulation depth and airflow, decide how much of that heat ends up in your living room.
Depth first
Older Austin homes routinely have six inches of settled insulation where current practice calls for far more. Topping up blown insulation is one of the highest-return projects available on a 1950s or 1960s house.
- Look for insulation level with or below the ceiling joists, which means it is thin.
- Check for gaps around can lights, the attic hatch, and along the eaves.
- Air seal top plates and penetrations before adding depth, or you are insulating a leak.
Then airflow
Insulation slows heat transfer. Ventilation removes the heat entirely, and it is usually the neglected half.
- Soffit vents blocked by insulation are extremely common after a top-up job.
- Baffles keep the intake path open at the eaves.
- Ridge or gable exhaust needs matching intake to work at all.
- A powered fan without adequate intake pulls conditioned air out of the house.
Check the ducts while you are up there
Most Austin homes run flex duct through the hottest part of the building. Crushed runs, disconnected boots, and torn insulation cost more comfort than any thermostat setting, and you can see all three with a flashlight.
