Fall home maintenance in Austin: what to do in October and November

October 2026 · 5 min read

Austin fall is short. The weeks between the end of the heat and the first freeze warning are the best time of year to get the house ready.

Heating and air

Your system just finished its hardest season.

  • Replace the HVAC filter after the summer run.
  • Schedule a heating safety check before the first cold night.
  • Test smoke and CO detectors, especially with gas heat.

Outside before winter

Leaves from live oaks drop in spring here, but pecans and cedar elms drop in fall.

  • Clean gutters and confirm downspouts drain away from the foundation.
  • Re-caulk gaps around windows and exterior penetrations.
  • Check weatherstripping on exterior doors.

Freeze prep

After February 2021, most Austin homeowners know why this matters.

  • Buy faucet covers and insulate exposed pipes.
  • Find and test the main water shutoff.
  • Drain and store garden hoses.
